Purple Audio Sweet10 Rack #2

Purple_2

Purple Audio Sweet 10 rack containing:

2x API 550b EQ: Classic API sounding eq. Not versatile at all, the first step is 2 dB, the second is 4! Other than that though, the sound is bold and very “in your face” with just the right amount of harshness. Keep in mind that the input is unbalanced. A nice trick to get some more API vibe is to connect them after 512c preamps with pads. After all, that is how it was usually operated inside a console (hence the unbalanced input). We have replaced stock API opamps with red dots. It is much more useful now. Aggressive without turning harsh.

2x Empirical Labs Deresser: Our go-to de-essers. Quite useful in HF limit mode too on various sources.

1x Little Labs VOG: Great unit, great name. Voice of god! how can you not love it? Initially developed to bring out chest resonance in singers that sing far away from the mic and do not take advantage of the proximity effect, the VOG has since found lots of uses in various instruments such as bass drum, bass, snare, etc. Essentially, it is a high pass filter with boost at the cut off frequency, but a great sounding one. Fully differential, which means that it is balanced from input to output.

2x API 512c: API classic preamps. Fast as hell, punchy as hell. Very articulate midrange. Now, the trick with these preamps is not to use their pad switch. It is situated before the input transformer, therefore the sound changes when you press it due to less saturation. But it is a very hot preamp, so you need to pad it at the output. Shure inline pads work great, A-Designs ATTYs work great, a console with high headroom works great. The meter turns red at +18dBu but the preamp has headroom up to +31dBu. Do not fear. Light it up!
